Summary of Tournament Format and Rules

This is a summary of the format and rules. Please refer to our Tournament Format and Rules - Long Version (50k PDF) before attending the tournament, and refer to our Tournament Details for more information.

Game Format:

  • 3 periods, 12 minutes each; 2 minute breaks between periods
  • Win = 3 points; Tie = 1 point; Loss = 0 points
  • Ties:
    • No tie-breaker in round-robin play unless necessary to determine playoff spots
    • Playoff games finishing in a tie go into overtime consisting of one 3 minute overtime period. If overtime results in a tie, there will be a round of 5 penalties. If after 5 penalties there is still a tie, sudden death – 1 for 1 until a winner is determined
  • 10 players maximum per team
  • 5 aside games: 4 on the field and a goalkeeper
  • 4 players minimum on the field at all times
    • Co-Ed divisions: 2 females minimum on the field at all times
  • Substitutions are unlimited; flying subs

Game Rules:

  • Wrist-bands must be checked by referee prior to all games
  • Shoes and shin guards not permitted; socks, tape and ankle guards permitted
  • Goal kicks:
    • Indirect
    • Keeper may throw or kick the ball into play and over the halfway line
    • Punting is allowed
  • Pass backs:
    • Pass backs to the goalie are allowed, but only once in a succession of play from the same player
    • Keeper can use their hands only once in succession
  • Free kicks, Penalty kicks:
    • Direct
    • No walls allowed except on kick-offs; kick-offs are indirect
    • Opponents must stay 5 yards from kicker
  • Corner kicks:
    • Direct
    • Goal kick given to opposing team if 6-second time rule is broken
    • Opponents must stay 5 yards away from kicker
  • Kick-ins/Throw-ins:
    • Indirect
    • Taken from the sidelines
    • No walls allowed
    • Opponents must stay 5 yards from kicker/thrower
  • No Offsides
